As it turns out, the new limited series is based on the heartbreaking 2018 novel by the same name by Georgia Hunter.

Both the series and the novel follow the true story of the Kurc family, a Jewish family from Radom, Poland, who separate and experience the terrors of Nazi and Soviet regimes.

“It is the spring of 1939 and three generations of the Kurc family are doing their best to live normal lives, even as the shadow of war grows closer,” the official description reads. “The talk around the family Seder table is of new babies and budding romance, not of the increasing hardships threatening Jews in their hometown of Radom, Poland. But soon the horrors overtaking Europe will become inescapable and the Kurcs will be flung to the far corners of the world, each desperately trying to navigate his or her own path to safety.”

“As one sibling is forced into exile, another attempts to flee the continent, while others struggle to escape certain death, either by working grueling hours on empty stomachs in the factories of the ghetto or by hiding as gentiles in plain sight,” the description continues. “Driven by an unwavering will to survive and by the fear that they may never see one another again, the Kurcs must rely on hope, ingenuity, and inner strength to persevere.”

By the description alone, we can already tell that the novel and the series will have us sobbing and biting our nails until the very end.

“There are no words,” wrote one book reviewer on Amazon. “This is the most amazing book I have ever read. I couldn’t hardly put it down. I had so many mixed emotions reading it. I was happy I was mad I was so sad I could cry. I was so elated.”

“This book captivated me from the first chapter, I could not put it down,” echoed another reviewer. “The story of the Kurcs family was one of hope, companionship, strength, courage, and so much love. This is one book I will not forget and unlike the majority of WWII books I read, this one had a decent and happy ending which was a wonderful thing to read after so much loss and despair.”

We’re adding it to our shopping carts (and must-watch lists) ASAP!
