Health experts unite to help patient expand her reaches

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Some home health nurses and therapists came together to help a patient overcome a big obstacle. They hope to broaden her horizons by simply getting her out of the house.

Shannon Hyden and her friends work for “Where the Heart is Home Health Agency. They’ve been working with Mto Imhotep on learning to drive her new wheelchair. Now that she can maneuver it, there’s a problem.

“She has a ramp already out there. But it’s all wood and it’s buckling and it’s just not safe for her to leave her home and come back in,” Hyden said.

She reached out to WREG because she wants to pass it on to Mto. Mto is a 32-year-old who has cerebral palsy.

“Mto, I brought News Channel 3. We nominated you for the Pass it on, and they chose you,” Hyden said. “300 of it is from News Channel 3 and the other 300 is from an anonymous donor but it’s to help you get a new ramp so you can go outside and go to church in your new chair.”

Before WREG’s Stephanie Scurlock could introduce herself, Mto made it clear she already knew who she was.

“Hey, Stephanie Scurlock,” Mto said. “I watch y’all at 6 and 10. 5, 6, and 10, go girl!  I love it. I love it. I appreciate it. I want to go outside.

The home health employees set up a GoFundMe page to raise the rest of the money to either fix the existing ramp or have a new sturdier one built.

The two things Mto talks about all the time is going to a job and going to church. She can’t wait to start exploring in her new chair.

As for how her nomination was chosen out of the dozen WREG gets each week, Mto is confident in her answer.

“It’s God’s plan, you know. It’s God’s plan,” Mto said.

Mto’s GoFundMe can be found here.
