HBO’s New Trailer for ‘His Dark Materials’ Contains a Very Important Clue About Ruth Wilson’s Character

The trailer shows 14-year-old rising star Dafne Keen as the dark-haired young girl, named Lyra, "a seemingly ordinary but brave young woman from another world. Her search for a kidnapped friend uncovers a sinister plot involving stolen children, and becomes a quest to understand a mysterious phenomenon called Dust."

"As she journeys through the worlds, including our own, Lyra meets Will, a determined and courageous boy. Together, they encounter extraordinary beings and dangerous secrets, with the fate of both the living—and the dead—in their hands," the synopsis reads.

In the award-winning trilogy, everyone in the books has a "Daemon," like a visible spirit animal, that follows them everywhere. A few of these can be glimpsed in the trailer, and the CGI looks incredible. (Pipe down about Ghost and Drogon, will ya?! We're all about these new leopards, bears and golden monkeys, oh my!)

We also get a good glimpse at James McAvoy as Lord Asriel, Lin Manuel Miranda as Lee Scoresby and Ruth Wilson as Marisa Coulter...and there's something suspect about Wilson's character (besides the fact that even the short snippet of her performance in this trailer is enough to convince us she'll be nominated for an Emmy next year...).

We won't give too much away from the novels, but we do know that Wilson's character, Marisa, is veryyy complicated. Although she appears to be evil and motivated by sinister objectives, she's extremely multi-faceted. In one scene from the trailer, we see Wilson's ice-blue eyes as she sits on the edge of the bed, gripping a white-fur blanket, looking pensive and calculating. "Why am I so important to her?!" Lyra's voice screams over the scene, presumably referring to Wilson's Ms. Coulter.

Perhaps she's not as clear-cut of a villain as we thought?

His Dark Materials premieres on November 4 at 9 p.m.
