Hawaii might be a paradise for another reason beyond all the natural wonders: According to a recent study, Hawaii is the most vegan-friendly U.S. state.

What makes Hawaii the best state for vegans? According to KITV Honolulu, a recent study found that the state has the highest number of fully vegan restaurants per capita of anywhere in the nation. The analysis was conducted using data pulled from Yelp, Happy Cow, and the 2020 U.S. Census. By this vegan restaurants per capita metric, Hawaii surfed to the top of the heap. Oregon took second place, followed by Rhode Island, Maryland, and California.

Some locals believe the high number of vegan restaurants could be related to growing interest in healthy ways of eating. “In Hawaii, we do have a lot of people who have diabetes or cardiovascular issues, so helping them move to a plant based diet can help them,” dietician Dash Cope told KITV.

The study also looked at the states with the lowest rates of vegan restaurants. Pulling up the rear with the fewest plant-based restaurants per capita were Oklahoma (50), Mississippi (49), and Alabama (48).
