Is this a dream, or have we been transported back to the early 2000s? It feels like both because there is a new Spy Kids movie that has jumped into the number-one spot on Netflix’s list of most-watched films.
The Spy Kids franchise began in 2001, with an original installment that grossed nearly $150 million at the global box office. Now, the series is being rebooted with Spy Kids: Armageddon—the fifth addition to the series, which premiered on Friday, September 22. And it seems there are still plenty of adolescent espionage fans out there, because the new action-packed comedy moved into the no. 1 spot on Netflix’s top movies list in a matter of only twenty-four hours.
Spy Kids: Armageddon follows similar themes to the original film. In this new installment, Tony (Connor Esterson) and Patty (Everly Carganilla) are the children of two of the world’s most-skilled secret agents, Nora (Gina Rodriguez) and Terrence (Zachary Levi). However, when these two youngsters accidentally aid a computer hacker in taking over the Earth’s technology, they have to tap into their own inner spies in order to save their parents...and the world.
Along with these leads, Spy Kids: Armageddon also stars D. J. Cotrona (G.I. Joe: Retaliation), Billy Magnussen (Bridge of Spies), Joe Schilling (Walker), Solar Dena Bennett (Look Both Ways) and Nicholas James Ortiz (Hypnotic).
In addition to the original Spy Kids (2001), the franchise includes Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams (2002), Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003) and Spy Kids: All the Time in the World (2011).
Robert Rodriguez served as the director and screenwriter on all four of the original films, and he returns in both capacities for the Netflix reboot. However, this time he co-wrote the script with Racer Max.
