A Haunting in Venice hits theaters on September 15, and, judging by the trailer, it looks like the perfect fall movie with plenty of mystery, intrigue, and supernatural elements. Plus, the all-star cast features Kenneth Branagh, Tina Fey, Michelle Yeoh, Kelly Reilly, and Jamie Dornan. But the plot of the movie left us wondering: Is A Haunting in Venice based on a book? Here's what to know before you buy your ticket.
What book is A Haunting in Venice based on?
The new movie is based on the 1969 novel Hallowe'en Party by the queen of mystery herself, Agatha Christie. The British author lived from 1890 to 1976 and wrote 66 novels and 14 short story collections. She remains the best-selling novelist of all time, with billions of copies sold.
Hallowe'en Party features Hercule Poirot, the detective who solved crimes in more than 30 of Christie's novels. Kenneth Branagh reprises his role in A Haunting in Venice after previously portraying Poirot in the 2022 movie Death on the Nile and 2017's Murder on the Orient Express. The movie finds a retired Poirot at an All Hallows' Eve séance at a haunted mansion when one of the guests is murdered.
How to watch A Haunting in Venice
The movie is exclusive to theaters on September 15. It's produced by 20th Century Studios, an entity of Disney, so when it comes to streaming, we expect it to be exclusive to Disney+. Movies typically stay in theaters for 45 days after their release, so it's possible that A Haunting in Venice will be on streaming in time for Halloween, but stay tuned for details.
If you want to watch the other movies with Branagh as Poirot, you can stream Death on the Nile on Hulu and rent Murder on the Orient Express on Prime Video.
