Harry Styles Played a Tiny Desk Concert With All the Best "Fine Line" Songs

Our king Harry Styles has blessed us with a gift to make these dark times a little bit brighter.

On March 16, NPR released the latest episode in their Tiny Desk Concert series. The former One Direction member (who presumably recorded the performance prior to the implemented social distancing recommendations in New York City), played with his backing band in the NPR office.

In the video, Harry wears a spiffy light blue sweater (which he later referred to in the video as a “badly chosen jumper” due to the hotness of the office) and is using his celestial-decorated acoustic guitar as a necessary accessory. The concert itself is just under twenty minutes long, but includes four of Harry’s best songs off his new album Fine Line.

He opens the concert with a devastating rendition of “Cherry,” before launching into an uplifting cover of “Watermelon Sugar.” But, before beginning the debut song off the album, Harry reveals that “Watermelon Sugar” was the longest its ever taken him to finish a song. He began writing it in 2017 and was partially inspired by the Richard Brautigan novel In Watermelon Sugar.

“We kind of liked it when we first had it, then I kind of really hated it for a long time and then came back and it kept kind of coming back into the mix,” he explained. “It’s kind of about that initial euphoria of like when you start seeing someone, you start sleeping with someone, or just like being around someone and you have that kind of excitement about them.”

With the NPR office continuing to “vibe” with Harry, he reveals that the next song on his set list, “To Be So Lonely” was one of his favorites to work on. He also jokes about the embarrassing moment that comes with the song when he performs it live: “The shame is when I sing the line about me being an arrogant son-of-a-b*tch it seems to be the one that people sing the loudest, but it is what it is.” Meanwhile, the final song on the Tiny Desk set list was, rightfully, "Adore You," which he jokingly says is about a fish that he “really liked.”

While the twenty minute video wasn’t nearly long enough for devoted Styles fans, it was a small sliver of happiness during uncertain times. Remember: wash your hands, don’t be racist, and stream Fine Line for good vibes. Oh, and don’t forget to practice conscious social distancing: Cue Harry Styles's own song, "Treat People with Kindness."
