Harry Styles Was Mere Miles Away From the 2022 VMAs—Here’s Why He Couldn’t Attend

Harry Styles has been nominated for a ton of awards at the 2022 VMAs, but don’t expect him to show up to collect, because he has other plans tonight: performing for all my friends who got tickets to his show at Madison Square Garden in NYC (not jealous, it’s fine).

Truly, the tragic irony of Harry being mere miles away from the VMAs (which are in Newark, New Jersey) but unable to hop over and walk the red carpet is too much for me. But happy for you if you’re seeing him at MSG, I guess!

Of course, we could get a virtual Harry appearance (will take what we can get, truly) considering it seems pretty inevitable that he’ll win at least one award at the VMAs. Possibilities that I've invented in my mind include:

  1. He accepts an award live onstage at MSG (although, honestly, that seems like it would require a lot of coordination).

  2. He pre-records an acceptance speech that airs during his win(s).

  3. He figures out how to time an appearance at two events at the same time.

Anyway! The good news—for those of us disappointed in the lack of Harry Styles at the VMAs—is that he’s showing up at the Venice Film Festival in just a few days for the premiere of Don’t Worry Darling with Olivia Wilde. And considering they starred in this movie together (and Olivia directed it), seems safe to assume this will be the couple’s first red carpet appearance.
