Harry Styles Just Dropped the Music Video of the Summer

While practicing social distancing, you might have lost track of time but summer is just around the corner, and, thankfully for us, Harry Styles is here to remind us.

After a day of teasers, on May 18, the singer unveiled the official video for “Watermelon Sugar,” the fourth single off his sophomore album Fine Line, and with it, Harry is bringing the summer breeze right into our homes.

Dedicated to “touching,” the video opens with Harry donning another impeccable manicure and clad in a crochet orange tank top and Elton John-worthy sunglasses as he enjoys a casual (watermelon) brunch on the shores of Malibu. According to a press release, the video was directed by creative duo Bradley & Pablo, who are also behind Lil Nas X’s “Rodeo,” and filming took place in January when shelter-in-place orders weren't yet introduced in California.

With ‘70s fashion galore, double entendre aplenty, and a film grainy aesthetic, the video is anything you’d expect from the British singer. After he’s seen casually jamming to his song while caressing and spinning his watermelon slice, we are transported to the sand, where a Bacchanal-style party ensues (if a bit more subdued than that of “Lights Up”).

Since its release back in November 2019, “Watermelon Sugar” has emerged as one of Harry’s most popular songs, becoming certified Platinum in the United States, Australia, and New Zealand.

The video for the track comes at a time where Harry was supposed to be embarked on the European leg of his “Love On Tour.” In light of COVID-19, on March 25, the tour was postponed to 2021. The rest of Harry’s tour is scheduled to take place as originally planned at the time of writing. The music video being an ode to, ehm, social interactions takes on a new meaning in light of COVID-19. However, Harry himself is currently practicing social distancing (and working on new music while doing so).
