Harry Styles Is Bringing Back the Tropical Shirt

Harry Styles has never backed down from a risky menswear trend. Whether it’s heels, floral suits, or freeing the nipple, over the past few years, all have become part of the musician’s sartorial repertoire. But last night in Los Angeles, Styles debuted a bold new look: Spotted leaving the San Vicente Bungalows—an exclusive members-only club for Hollywood’s elite—Styles wore a bright blue Hawaiian shirt from Gucci over a white tank. The playful tropical motif, coupled with high-waist khaki trousers and woven loafers, made for an appealingly offbeat ensemble. Part Magnum P.I., part Miami Vice, the retro combination was completely in line with Styles’s personal taste.

This isn’t the first time Styles has added a little tropical flair to his wardrobe. A longtime fan of vibrant patterns, he’s been wearing variations of the palm print since his days in One Direction. But while a seasoned clotheshorse like Styles can make florals and flamingos look easy to pull off, a fashion movement only counts once everyday people get onboard. Thankfully, variations on the camp shirt have already made an impact on the runway, so it’s only a matter of time before we start to see regular guys pulling out their Hawaiian prints once more.
