Harry Styles' Style Was the Best Thing About This Week's SNL

The former boy band member's solo career—and his signature style—just blasted off.

By Liza Corsillo.

Harry Styles joined host Jimmy Fallon tonight on Saturday Night Live as the musical guest but from what we saw, the former One Direction member stole the show, first when he shimmied to David Bowie's "Let's Dance" during Fallon's monologue, then channeled a young Mick Jagger during a '70s-era Family Feud sketch, and finally, when he performed for the first time on national TV as a solo artist. And while the singer's first live performance of his Bowie-esque single "Sign of the Times" is sure to take over headlines, it was what the stylish Brit was wearing that held our attention tonight.

We're talking about the double-breasted, wide lapel plaid Gucci suit Styles wore while performing his first solo single. The modern take on a dandified Saville Row suit looks right at home on Styles and cements his new menswear persona—the dandy heartthrob.

And so we're clear, those fat lapels, the loaded shoulder pads, the streamlined tapered pants, and the five plus rings are not easy style moves to ace. Each requires the kind of confidence that comes from dressing the way you want, not because some manager told you what to do. It's what we'd imagine Styles was feeling during his second song when he ditched the jacket in favor of a simpler, less sartorial fit.

This SNL appearance marks one of the final steps in Styles's career reincarnation, one which began with a haircut that rocked the world and will culminate with the former One Direction singer's debut solo album release on May 12th. And while we can't predict whether we'll love his new songs. We know we're in for an incredibly stylish summer of Harry Styles fits. After all, no transformation would be complete without the right clothes.
