"Harry Potter" Stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint Texted About Rupert's New Baby

Ah, childhood. It seems like just yesterday we were watching a Harry Potter marathon on Freeform. (Wait, it was.) But the passage of time comes for us all, and one great way to measure it is by the milestones you and your friends accrue.

That goes double for the stars of the beloved movie franchise, especially now that Rupert Grint and longtime girlfriend Georgia Groome confirmed her pregnancy in April. Like any good friend, Daniel Radcliffe is excited for the new chapter.

During a remote appearance on Watch What Happens Live!, the actor told host Andy Cohen that he “texted him [Rupert] the other day, actually, just being like, I’m so happy for him.” (Given Rupert and Georgia’s rep issued a statement after much of the world issued shelter-in-place orders, an IRL celebration likely wasn’t possible.) “It’s very, very cool.”

But here’s the kicker: Daniel admitted to Andy and fellow guest Ellie Kemper he had what is likely the same reaction you did to the news. “It’s also super weird for me to think that we are all of the age where we’re having children, but we definitely are and it’s really cool,” he said.

Rupert is 31 and Daniel is 30, which is par for the course for many millennials who decide they want to have kids these days. The data tends to focus on people who identify as women, but one study from Stanford University found that the average age for someone who identifies as a man to become a first-time father is 30.9.

Even so, Daniel gets that some people might always remember him as the wizard boy who got his letter from Hogwarts on his 11th birthday, and that he is inextricably linked to their own childhoods. “We’re all just a terrible yardstick for how old you are,” he added with a laugh. “I remember when I turned 30, a lot of people in my life were really depressed to find out that had happened.”

The actor also reminisced on living through the false rumors that he contracted coronavirus, though he says his girlfriend “got more texts than I did” about the reports.

Meanwhile, you can relive that nostalgic Harry Potter obsession with a new celebrity-read audiobook of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone — Daniel himself narrates chapter one.
