'Harry & Meghan' Promises the Whole Truth

On Thursday morning, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle revealed the first teaser for their much-anticipated Netflix docuseries. The title? Simply: Harry & Meghan. The six-part series, helmed by Liz Garbus (What Happened, Miss Simone?) promises to tell the true story of how the famous couple met—and detail the struggles they faced with the press and within the royal family. The Duke and Duchess first announced the project over two years ago, after making their official retreat from royal activities. (They later gave a tell-all interview to Oprah in 2021 about, well, everything.)

"Why did you want to make this documentary?" Garbus asks the couple in the teaser trailer. Prince Harry responds, "No one knows what’s happening behind closed doors." Though the trailer ended with an announcement that it would be "coming soon," Netflix revealed that the first three episodes—dubbed Part One of the series—are set to drop on Thursday, December. 8. The second half of the six-episode series with air a week later, on December 15.

Harry & Meghan will mark the first official release from the royal couple's lucrative Netflix deal with Archewell Productions. Archewell marks the duo's major media venture after leaving the royal family, which also includes plans for a documentary on the Invictus Games and Markle's Archetypes Spotify podcast. "I had to do everything I could to protect my family," Harry says in the teaser about their decision to leave. Meghan adds, "When the stakes are this high, doesn’t it make more sense to hear our story from us?"

Along with the trailer, which highlights images of the couple growing up and falling in love, Netflix promises that Harry & Meghan will include "commentary from friends and family, most of whom have never spoken publicly before about what they witnessed," as well as "historians who discuss the state of the British Commonwealth today and the royal family’s relationship with the press." Juicy stuff.

As Variety reports, eagle-eyed royal family aficionados may have noticed that the teaser dropped within 24 hours of another scandal. Lady Susan Hussey, a member of the British family's royal household, resigned after she was accused of making offensive and racist remarks to Ngozi Fulani at Buckingham Palace. Ngozi, who runs the charity Sistah Space, later said that Lady Hussey kept asking her where she "really came from," despite Ngozi insisting that she was born in Britain. In their interview with Oprah, the Duke and Duchess alleged that they were subject to many racist remarks by the British tabloids and within their own family—especially when conversation involved the potential appearance of their children.

Harry & Meghan will premiere on Netflix much earlier than expected, hitting the platform on Thursday, December 8.
