Harry, Meghan, and Archie Are Absent from Queen's Family Photos on Her Desk

  • A new image previewing Queen Elizabeth II's annual Christmas Day broadcast has been released.

  • Notably absent from the queen's desk are photos of Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan, who were in the frame of the queen's 2018 address.

Christmas came early for devout royal family fans when a newly released image previewing Queen Elizabeth II’s annual Christmas address was released today.

In the official image, the queen is pictured sitting at her desk in Winsdor Castle's Green Drawing Room wearing a royal blue Angela Kelly dress, a three-strand pearl necklace, matching stud earrings, and a sapphire, diamond, and gold brooch, which was originally gifted to Elizabeth's ancestor Queen Victoria by her husband, Prince Albert.

As she normally does year after year during her annual Christmas address, the queen has a handful of framed photographs on display, showcasing specific members of the royal family. This year, her husband, Prince Philip; Prince Charles and Duchess Camila; the entire Cambridge family; and her late father, King George VI, are all prominently displayed on her desk for her Christmas address.

Notably absent are photographs of the Sussex family—no traces of Prince Harry, Duchess Meghan, or their son, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, are in the official image. Last year, the queen had a family photo on display that featured Meghan and Harry alongside the rest of the immediate royal family members.

The new official image is released after the news that Prince George is expected to play a prominent role in the queen’s Christmas broadcast this year.

"With key royals ill, absent or banished, the little prince will play a starring role in the queen's Christmas Day broadcast," reported The Sunday Times' royal correspondent, Roya Nikkhah. Reportedly, George's presence is meant to bring a bit of holiday joy to the end of what's been a turbulent media year for the royal family.

One theme that will be expressed in the queen's speech will be that of resilience. In a press release shared from the palace's royal communications team, a quote excerpted from Her Majesty's speech explains the importance of resilience when it comes to her own life as well as her country.

"Small steps taken in faith and in hope can overcome long-held differences and deep-seated divisions to bring harmony and understanding…," reads an excerpt from the queen's Christmas Day address. "The path, of course, is not always smooth, and may at times this year have felt quite bumpy, but small steps can make a world of difference.”
