The wait is finally over: Kensington Palace released the first photo of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's spectacular wedding cake, and it's even more ornate than Duchess Kate's. We knew the dessert would be different – before the wedding, the palace announced that the couple chose to serve an elderflower sponge cake rather than a traditional fruitcake. Amazingly, this was the first royal wedding to do so (even Pippa had a fruitcake!).

While this was certainly a break from tradition, it's likely not the only dessert they'll be enjoying today. At William and Kate's 2011 wedding, both a traditional fruitcake and a chocolate biscuit groom's cake were served. In today's afternoon festivities, Harry and Meghan had several small sweet treats on hand.

More surprising than the cake's ingredients, though, was the difference in the cake's shape. Both Harry's brother's and parents' cakes were traditionally stacked, with several tiers on top of one another (five for Princess Diana's cake and eight for Duchess Kate's). Harry and Meghan chose to have their layers be slightly off-kilter, with ornate gold cake stands holding the masterpiece up.

All three cakes incorporated florals, but Harry and Meghan's cake took it a step further with more pronounced flowers covering the rough-iced cake, rather than just placed on top. In other similarities, Diana, Kate, and Meghan all chose British bakers to create their wedding cakes. Princess Diana's was crafted by the Royal Navy's Cookery School; Duchess Kate's by McVitie's Cake Company; and Duchess Meghan's by Claire Ptak of London’s Violet Bakery. Despite the differences, we have no doubt all three were Delish.
