Harrison Ford always looks right at home while playing the lead in the classic Indiana Jones films, but apparently he wasn't always down with the character's now-iconic getup.

As revealed in a new interview, the legendary actor, now 80,  admitted to first having some reservations about the character of Indy—and more specifically, about what the famed archaeologist was expected to wear.

During the development of the first film, Steven Spielberg's Raiders of the Lost Ark, which premiered back in 1981, Ford apparently gave some pushback on his character's whip-yielding persona, telling GQ Magazine the costume "was presented to me as an aspect of character in the first film."

"My questions about it were many," he continued, as he remembered wondering, "Why am I wearing a leather jacket in the jungle? Isn’t it hot here? Why am I carrying a whip? What am I going to do with a f--king whip? Am I going to whip people?"

He then explained that he was told Indiana Jones' costume—which also includes a pinch-front fedora—was meant to represent "an evocation of time" and a "reflection of movies past."

"I said, okay, and that makes it my own," he concluded.

And it's a good thing Ford went along with the wardrobe choices for his onscreen counterpart, because the Indiana Jones franchise would go on to become a major success across multiple decades—with the main character sporting perhaps one of the most memorable costumes in all of film history.

Ford recently gave his fans one last look at him in the famous garb, reprising his role as Indiana Jones for the fifth and final time in the latest film, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which is playing in theaters now.
