Harrison Ford Hopes Indiana Jones Retires Along With Him

The number one question when anyone in Hollywood says that they're finished is: "Are you sure?" Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson just recently returned to the Fast & Furious franchise, Clint Eastwood has starred in four films since Gran Torino, and Michael Keaton put the skin-tight Batsuit back on for The Flash. You can threaten to retire, sure, but you just can't stay away. So, when Harrison Ford announced that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny would be his last appearance as 'ol Indy, Hollywood had to ask: "You sure about that?"

"Is it not evident?" the 80-year-old actor replied during a press conference at Cannes Film Festival, according to People. "I need to sit down and rest a little bit. I love to work, and I love this character, and I love what it brought into my life, and that's all I can say." He added that he's hopeful the new film will "round up the story."

Ford debuted the latest Indiana Jones film at the prestigious annual film festival in France to a rousing, five-minute standing ovation. He was also presented with an honorary Palme d'Or award. "Everything has come together to support me in my old age, and I love the work," he said. "So I just want to work and I want to tell stories, good stories, and I have been so lucky in my life to have that opportunity."

But Ford is also hoping that when he retires the famous film character, the character will be retired along with him. Whatever Disney plans to do with the Indiana Jones series next will be without Ford's involvement, according to the actor, but recasting Indy for a reboot may be off the table.

"Nobody is going to be Indiana Jones," Ford told The Today Show back in 2019. "I'm Indiana Jones. When I'm gone, he's gone. It's easy." He also joked that it was "a hell of a way to tell Chris Pine," adding that he was, "sorry, man." But not just Chris Pine! Ford doesn't want anyone to take up the Indy mantle—not a single one of the Hollywood Chrises. Still, this likely won't be the last time he's asked about returning. For now, let's just celebrate the man.
