'Happy wife, happy life!' Yahoo commenters love Denzel Washington's advice for a happy marriage
“Respect. That pretty much sums up everything.”
“Spoken like a true and loving husband.”
This weekend, Denzel Washington swept up not only at the box office with the success of his first sequel, Equalizer 2, but in Yahoo Entertainment’s comments section, where readers were smitten with the way he talks about his wife and their 35-year marriage.
“My wife has made our house a home,” Washington told People in an exclusive interview, “and raised these beautiful kids and protected them and sacrificed for them. She did the heavy lifting.”
The Golden Globe and Academy Award-winning actor gushed about his lasting love with his wife, Pauletta. When asked what makes a marriage work for more than three decades, he joked: “I do what I’m told. I keep my mouth shut.”
Yahoo commenters had only blessings for the happy couple.
“It takes two to roll the boulder uphill through life,” one reader commented on the original People article. “Sounds like he and his wife both do their part beautifully.”
“He has a beautiful family that have been brought up with love and respect,” another commenter said.
Denzel fans flocked to the comments section to laud his words and work: “Amazing human being,” one reader said. “His humble and honest nature keeps him grounded in real life. I appreciate him for his work and for always doing things the right way.”
“A man with just a kind heart and true love for his wife and that’s what I’m talking about,” another commenter wrote. “I respect and admire Mr. Washington,” said one fan. “Keep up the great work.”
Several commenters invoked an age-old adage to summarize the Equalizer lead’s advice — “Happy wife, happy life!” — with some fans even comparing him to another wise public figure: “Such wisdom. Right up there with Yoda.”
While most commenters were impressed by the longevity of the relationship (“In Hollywood years, that’s like saying they been together 100 years!!!!”), some felt Denzel’s viewpoint and advice could use a modern translation: “I think Denzel meant what makes his marriage work are active communication/listening and compromise.”
On social media, fans were just relieved to see their reliable star trending for a good reason.
