What Will Happen When Aidan Returns for the 'SATC' Reboot'?

After the first season of the Sex and the City revival series, And Just Like That, came and went without a peep from everyone’s favorite turquoise-wearing furniture designer, John Corbett is definitely coming back as Aidan for Season 2—and set photos imply there’s a strong possibility he and Carrie are giving their romance another go. Third time’s the charm, right?

Well, maybe not. As Sex and the City fans know, the cast and crew are absolute pros when it comes to misdirection. Remember when the first movie came out in 2008 and everyone thought Carrie’s lavish wedding to Mr. Big had been spoiled by the paparazzi snapping Sarah Jessica Parker in her voluminous Vivienne Westwood gown? Surprise! Carrie put a bird on her head only to get jilted. She then tied the knot at City Hall in a “vintage, label-less” suit that was actually John Galliano for Christian Dior. Classic Carrie.

All of which is to say that Aidan’s return might not be what it seems. Carrie Bradshaw? In Coney Island? Is this reality or a fever dream brought on by complications from another hip surgery?

Fans have been burned on this front before by Corbett himself, who claimed he would be back for Season 1 of AJLT and then just wasn’t.

“John Corbett should be writing personal apology notes,” writer Julie Rottenberg told Deadline in February 2022. “We didn’t say anything.” Executive producer Michael Patrick King echoed that sentiment, but he also noted that Carrie went through a lot in Season 1—the death of her husband, hip surgery, learning what a podcast is. An Aidan return would simply have been too much at that time…but maybe one could happen in the future.

“We always try to be very restrained and look at the reality of what people are experiencing and it has nothing to do with Aidan coming or not coming,” King explained to Deadline. “We wanted to get her through this and into the light—the last episode is called ‘Seeing the Light.’ We wanted to get her out. [Aidan’s return] is a big storyline that everybody at home wrote that we had never intended.”

Judging by the new set photos, however, Carrie’s now past those hurdles, and the king of rugged luxury is finally coming back—the only question now is how.

How did things end for Aidan in Sex and the City?

Aidan and Carrie dated twice in Sex and the City. The first time, their relationship ended in Season 3 after she cheated on him with Mr. Big (Chris Noth), who was then married to Natasha (Bridget Moynahan). They rekindled their romance in Season 4 but ultimately broke up again when Carrie balked at the idea of marriage (despite having accepted Aidan's proposal). Aidan’s last appearance is in the Season 6 premiere “To Market, To Market,” which shows Carrie bumping into him by chance in the streets of New York City. She finds out that Aidan has married another furniture designer named Kathy, with whom he shares a baby named Tate (aka Tater).

What happened to Aidan in the Sex and the City movies?

Aidan did not appear in the first Sex and the City movie, which documented the fallout from Big leaving Carrie at the altar and their subsequent reunion and marriage. In the second one—which some fans joke is not canon because it’s so awful—Carrie ran into Aidan at a market in Abu Dhabi. They later had dinner, where Aidan revealed that he was still married to Kathy and they had two more sons. The too-friendly exes shared a somewhat steamy goodnight kiss, which Carrie eventually confessed to Big. But did Aidan tell his wife about his indiscretion? Perhaps we'll find out soon.

Like every plot detail about Season 2 of And Just Like That, Aidan’s return is shrouded in mystery (and apparently cigarette smoke, which is odd given Aidan's one-time stance against Carrie's Marlboro Lights). Are Aidan and Carrie dating again? Is she just using him to score a discount on a reclaimed wood credenza? What happened to that hot podcast producer she kissed at the end of Season 1? Read on for some possibilities.

1. Aidan and Carrie are truly back together for the third time

Depending on where you stand, this is either the best news ever or a development so foul you’re threatening to stop watching the show. Set images shared by AJLT’s official Instagram account show Carrie and Aidan strolling hand-in-hand through the city and kissing in the middle of the street, oncoming traffic be damned. Where this leaves Kathy and the children is unclear, but Carrie’s single after the death of Big, so presumably she’s not cheating this time.

2. And they’re getting married

Sarah Jessica Parker was spotted on set in the aforementioned Vivienne Westwood gown, leading fans to wonder whether she’s ready to tie the knot again. She could be, but let’s be real—Carrie Bradshaw would not recycle a wedding dress on pain of death. She’s probably just wearing it to the Guggenheim or something.

3. It’s all a dream sequence

This seems unlikely given the sheer number of Carrie and Aidan photos out there, but no judgment if you need to keep that hope alive. In fairness, there was a dream sequence involving Big in the AJLT Season 1 finale, but adding another one might take the show too far into Twin Peaks territory. When discussing the Season 1 dream, Michael Patrick King told Deadline that “a dream is a little dicey always,” so it’s tough to imagine him getting on board for a multi-scene hallucination. Still, stranger things have happened (like Charlotte refusing to eat anything but chocolate pudding at a five-star Mexican resort).

4. This is just research for Carrie’s next book or podcast

Look, it’s kind of awkward to talk about dating your hot podcast producer on your podcast when he’s right there producing the podcast. Maybe Carrie gave up Franklyn (Ivan Hernandez) and decided to go back to Aidan for the sake of the content. This would also explain why she agreed to go to Coney Island in the winter. Did she take the F train? “Avenue X? I couldn’t help but wonder…where was Avenue Z?”
