Hanging Lake to release reservation times during continued trail reconstruction

DENVER (KDVR) — One of Colorado’s most well-known trails is still under reconstruction after being destroyed in a 2020 fire. While Hanging Lake still has a ways to go, limited reservation slots will open this summer.

Last year, reconstruction started on the trail to make it more sustainable after the Grizzly Creek Fire caused flooding and mudslides. Heading into this summer, crews are still working on trail reconstruction and bridge replacements.

Continued construction on Hanging Lake

Starting in May, the Hanging Lake Trail will be closed Monday through Friday for construction along with some weekends later in the summer, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Hanging Lake Trail reconstruction expected to impact hiking access

While construction is expected to continue through the summer and into the fall, some hikers will get a chance to see Hanging Lake and other Glenwood Canyon trails during the reconstruction.

Reservations will be available weekly on Glenwood Springs’ website with available hiking dates and times released every Tuesday, starting at 8 a.m. on April 30.

Meanwhile, the department is also reconstructing the Grizzly Creek and Jessie Weaver (No Name) trails in May.

The goal of this project is to replace the trail’s seven bridges and build a boardwalk at Spouting Rock to reduce erosion and other impacts. By the end of the bridge replacements on Grizzly Creek and Jessie Weaver, hikers can head to and from the trailheads, even during high water.

During construction, the department said that the existing trail closure two miles up the Grizzly Creek trail will be extended down to the picnic tables, which are about 0.3 miles from the trailhead.

The existing closure of the Jessie Weaver Trail will be slightly extended to the first bridge, about three miles from the trailhead.
