Hanging baskets and potted plants are popular choices for Mother’s Day gifts

CAMBRIDGE − Mother’s Day is certainly about Mom, but it’s also about the flowers. Lots and lots of flowers.

“It’s definitely the biggest seller,” said Lynn Boylan, who started An Enchanted Garden Florist & Gift Shoppe at 5851 Glen Highway in 2004. “And it’s usually pastel (colors). Then there’s always a person who says to just make it bright and colorful.”

She said mixed arrangements are by far the most popular that she and her business partner, daughter-in-law Allison Boylan, are putting together.

“We usually buy a lot of roses, too, but it’s not like Valentine’s Day, where they want dozens of roses. For Mother’s Day they want roses in a mixed arrangement,” said Lynn. “And some customers have a special preference like lilies or daisies.”

Molly Nickell of Nickell's Greenhouse at 1335 Highland Ave. sees the same mixed bouquet requests.

“I’ve had this greenhouse for 33 years and every year customers buy their mothers a hanging basket of multiple colors,” said Nickell, who cited purple, pinks, yellows, and golds as top colors sold. “We literally sell hundreds and hundreds of hanging baskets for Mother’s Day. I just think people think their mother wants a hanging basket of flowers.”

Nickell said she thinks it would be nice if folks considered other items for their moms.

“There’s always a gift certificate if they’re local,” said Nickell. “Another idea would be a potted bush or something like a potted perennial they could take and plant for their mother (if they have a yard). And then it comes up every year and blooms.”

Boylan agreed with that notion and said she often has local customers come in and purchase other types of gift items for their moms that they really love.

“A lot of them come in and buy jewelry that we have here,” said Boylan. “We also have the yarn shop, so people buy that. We have the 11:11 body butter, too. We’re already doing a lot of arrangements for those.”

And for those last-minute shoppers?

“We’re open all day Sunday,” said Nickell. “Just in case.”
