June (Elisabeth Moss) and Janine (Madeline Brewer) finally made it to the front lines of Gilead in season 4 of The Handmaid’s Tale. Unfortunately, this glimmer of hope was quickly replaced by fear when the two were knocked off their feet by an explosion. Through the smoke and destruction, June found Moira (Samira Wiley)'s outstretched hand, but Janine was lost in the rubble.

Speaking with Good Housekeeping, actress Madeline Brewer dives deeper into the moments leading up to this heart-racing scene that left fans asking about what happened to her character.

So, is Janine alive or dead in The Handmaid's Tale season 4?

According to the 29-year-old actress, we haven’t seen the last of Janine just yet. “We see Janine by the end of the season,” she reveals to us, while cryptically adding: “It’s not at a place that we want her to be, but such is life.”

While fans have seen June try her best to protect Janine since season 1 of the Hulu drama, Madeline says her character reached her limit by the time they were in the milk tank.

“Janine’s finally at a point with June where she’s like, ‘What are we doing? I’ve never questioned you before but right now we were supposed to be safe. You were the only person who knew where we were going and now, I’m stuck in a milk tank with you. And you have no idea what’s going on. How the h--l did we get here? Give me something,’” Madeline explains.

Even so, Madeline believes Janine simply can’t imagine her life in Gilead without June. As fans know, the idea of the two going their separate ways was teased when Janine decided to stay behind with the group of survivors. But Madeline says that Janine was never set on doing this.

“I don’t think she ever really wanted to leave June,” she tells us. “She loves June and she wanted to stay with her. She realized that ‘I have to see this through to the end with my friend, whatever [the] end is.’ Janine means what she says, ‘I feel safer when we’re together.’ Because they’ve been safer to a degree this whole time.”

With June safely now in Canada, fans will have to keep tuning in to see where Janine pops up next. Whether Janine and June meet again or not, Madeline says that they’ve served a meaningful purpose in each other’s stories that won’t be forgotten.

“June is such a mother figure even though I look at the two of them like sisters,” Madeline reflects. “It’s a really interesting dynamic between the two of them being such good friends but then having this maternal kind of exchange and Janine being a mother herself. It’s very complicated but it’s very special. It’s unlike any other relationship there is on the show.”
