New Hampshire Ski Resort Halts Operations Due To Storm

The rain this early season has been making things difficult for resorts across America.

Waterville Valley Resort in New Hampshire is one of them, even announcing that it is taking precautions to buffer the effects of the storm rolling in.

The resort announced that "with the holidays around the corner, Waterville Valley Resort is preparing to host merry festivities, jolly events, and magical mountain moments. But unfortunately, we are once again faced with challenging weather."

"The entire Eastern Seaboard is forecasted to receive a battering of pre-mature snow and high winds tonight, continuing through to tomorrow evening. This intense storm is set to hit all of New England's ski resorts."

With 90 mph winds and flash flooding around the region, power outages, and overall severe weather patterns, ski resorts have to do their best to preserve conditions for guests.

Specifically in Waterville Valley, unusually warm temps (50°s), strong winds blowing at 45-65mph, and rain are at threat of ruining snowpack.

Officials at Waterville said that "while news of this storm is disheartening, we are taking action to prevent unnecessary harm to our snowpack. We will be limiting human interaction with the snowpack while it is in a fragile state by implementing a 'Save the Snow Day'."

That means "all alpine and Nordic ski operations will be closed tomorrow, Monday, December 18th."

"This closure will help us preserve not only the snowpack but also the skier experience. We understand that this news may be disappointing. We never want to halt operations. But the Waterville Valley Resort Team works in pursuit of the same primary goal: to provide an exceptional skier experience."

Luckily, normal alpine ski area operations will resume Tuesday, December 19th at 9:00 AM.

Secondly, nordic ski operations will reopen when conditions allow, please tune into the Nordic snow report for future updates.

Waterville Resort urges visitors to "stay dry, stay safe, and think snowy thoughts. Ski ya soon!"

Will you be on first chair after the storm, or wait to weather the storm and see how conditions stack up down the road?
