New Hampshire Resort Closing To "Save The Snow"

Waterville Valley Resort, or the official resort of the Boston Red Sox, put out some fair, although less-than-homerun news yesterday when officials announced the mountain will be closed today, on December 11th, in an attempt to conserve snow.

Officials at WVR wrote that "old Man Winter is back to his fickle ways. He's delivered incredible early-season snowfall, with over 2 feet this season alone!"

Then, the news turns sour, as officials at Waterville Valley Resort share that "tomorrow, we're forecasted to receive inclement weather. Temperatures are expected to reach the high 30°s/ low 40°s, with wind speeds of up to 40-60mph."

"Unfortunately, we also have some pre-mature snow in the forecast. This rough weather is a blip in an otherwise incredible early season."

Waterville Valley Resort is hosting the 2024 United Waterville Freestyle Cup, where "the world’s best freestyle mogul skiers will converge on the birthplace of freestyle skiing in America with the addition of moguls and dual moguls FIS World Cups at Waterville Valley Resort, New Hampshire, for the 2024 and 2025 seasons."

Waterville Valley Resort opened the first freestyle instruction program in the United States in 1969. In 1970 it organized the first National Open Championships of Freestyle Skiing on the Sunnyside trails.

Over the years, it has hosted 11 alpine World Cup races, 4 U.S. Freestyle Championships,1 U.S. Alpine Championships, and numerous freeski and snowboard U.S. Revolution Tours.

Ultimately, right now the resort has to do what's best for the long-term ski season, so "in an effort to preserve the snow, we're implementing a 'Save the Snow Day' and will be suspending alpine and Nordic ski operations for tomorrow, Monday, December 11th."

"Snow preservation is critical this early in the season. By halting all on-snow operations, we can mitigate the damage caused to our snowpack. Snowmakers are standing by, preparing to blow snow on Sunnyside trails. Once temperatures drop on Monday night, our crews will be ready to fire up the snowmaking system."

"Normal alpine and Nordic ski area operations will resume Tuesday, December 12th at 9:00 AM."

"If you purchased lift tickets, rentals, lessons, or childcare for Monday 12/11/23, a member of our Guest Services Team will be reaching out to you directly."

"Stay dry! We can't wait to see you back on the slopes!"

Waterville Valley Resort urges guests to "think snow."

Don't just think snow. Pray for snow. Dance for snow!
