Netflix's Halston series will premiere on Friday without a stamp of approval from the late fashion designer's family.

A statement from the Halston Archives released on May 10 expressed the family's disapproval, calling the series an "inaccurate, fictionalized account" of Roy Halston Frowick's life. Neither the Frowick family nor representatives of the designer's archives were consulted about the project, per the statement. "The Halston Archives remains the only definitive and comprehensive source on the man and his legacy as the personally appointed custodian of his private papers and effects," they wrote.

In an additional statement to T&C, Lesley Frowick, Halston's niece and CEO and founder of his archive further explained: "The producers of this 'miniseries' on our beloved uncle Halston did not contact or secure the authorization from the Halston Archives or family. Thus it is unauthorized."

Lesley worked for her uncle before his death in 1990 and served as an executive producer for Frédéric Tcheng's 2019 Amazon Prime documentary, Halston. She points to the book she authored, Halston: Inventing American Fashion, as the "definitive biography on my uncle Halston."

In addition to sharing disapproval for the Netflix series, the press release from the Archive announced new charitable endeavors. "Following in the steps of Halston's generosity while living, his family will be adding an initiative to the Halston Archives that will partner with select non-profit organizations and institutions to establish fashion scholarships in Halston's name as a way to inspire and empower the next generation of American Fashion Designers," it read. "In addition to this exciting resource, The Halston Archives will be launching a non-profit limited, self-sustaining and iconic product line based on original artwork that will fund the scholarship program and continuity of the Archives with the goal of ensuring the Halston legacy lives on in future generations of Fashion students."

"Let us remember my uncle Halston for his endless contributions to American fashion and culture," Frowick told T&C.
