Halsey Wins Favorite Pop/Rock Song at 2019 AMAs

"Sometimes you grow up and the things you believed in start to lose its magic, but music never does."

Congrats are in order for Halsey, as her song “Without Me” was just named the favorite pop/rock song of the year at the 2019 American Music Awards — marking her very first AMA win.

Halsey accepted her award with a heartfelt speech, telling the audience that she grew up watching award shows like the AMAs. “I would sit at home, wide-eyed, watching artists in these beautiful gowns and handsome suits strolling up the stairs to the stage, and they would hold up these awards…these metaphors, these trophies that were supposed to be some kind of validation for the soul-crushing and heartache-inducing work of writing a song and bringing it to life,” she said. “And to be honest with you, I really believed that fairy tale.”

The singer-songwriter went on to say that, like most things you believe when you’re little, awards aren’t what they seem — but the AMAs are a little different, in her opinion. “I’m thankful to the AMAs because they are the world’s largest fan-voted award show,” Halsey explained. “I’m thankful to the fans because they are the people who really give a sh*t about music. I’m thankful to the AMAs for giving those people a voice.”

Halsey ended her speech by promising to keep making music for her fans, for the people who value the same things she does. “Sometimes you grow up and the things you believed in start to lose its magic, but music never does,” she said. “Real fans, real artists, and real stories keep that magic alive. Thank you.”
