Halsey Says the Hotel Industry Doesn't Offer Shampoo and Conditioner for People of Color
As you can imagine, entertainers spend a fair amount of time traveling and living out of hotels. Hotels can often be a second home for singers like Halsey, so having the sorts of comforts available in your normal home is important. On Friday, Halsey took to Twitter to talk about an area that hotels could do better, and it left fans on social media a bit polarized. While some people see her point that hotel shampoos and conditioners might only work for white people, others think she's trying to make an issue out of nothing.
She started off by calling out the hotel industry for using shampoos and conditioners that she believes only work for white people. She said, "I’ve been traveling for years now and it’s been so frustrating that the hotel toiletry industry entirely alienates people of color. I can’t use this perfumed watered down white people shampoo. Neither can 50% of ur customers. Annoying."
Immediately, people questioned the validity of her claim and the fact that different types of hair needed different shampoo. However, she answered these tweets, saying that white people and people of color need different hair care products due to different textures. She also addressed the fact that, while she is fortunate enough to be able to buy and bring her own shampoo, other people who travel for work or medical reasons may want or need to use the shampoos provided by hotels.
Some folks saw her point, and agreed that it feels "othering" and like a microaggression to not be able to use the shampoo and conditioner that is provided. No hotels have responded to her tweets, but it certainly is something to think about.
