Halsey has not been one to shy away from using their platform to speak their mind and spread awareness about causes that hit close to home. The “So Good” singer has been open about their past miscarriages and has even used the jumbotron at their live shows to share impactful statistics about reproductive rights. Most recently, the About-Face Beauty mogul penned a passionate essay for Vogue about the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and their personal experiences with abortion and how the procedure saved their life after their failed pregnancies.

Halsey welcomed her first child, Ender, with boyfriend Alev Aydin in July 2021. The singer went on to release a genre-bending album, If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power, about their postpartum experiences with motherhood. In her op-ed for Vogue, Halsey revealed that they had miscarried three separate times before their 24th birthday and noted that it was “a cruel irony” that they could lose their unborn child as easily as they could get pregnant.

“One of my miscarriages required ‘aftercare,’ a gentle way of saying that I would need an abortion, because my body could not terminate the pregnancy completely on its own and I would risk going into sepsis without medical intervention,” Halsey wrote, before admitting she felt “helpless” during the procedure as she was “desperate to end the pregnancy that was threatening [her] life.”

They revealed that they “prepared for the worst” and rewrote their will ahead of Ender’s birth in fear that the pregnancy wouldn’t follow through. Halsey also shared that she has “never felt more strongly” about abortion rights after being asked if her experiences have led her to believe otherwise. “My abortion saved my life and gave way for my son to have his. Every person deserves the right to choose when, if, and how they have this dangerous and life-altering experience,” they said before closing off their essay with a promise that they’ll fight for reproductive rights till the end: “I will hold my son in one arm and fight with all my might with the other.”
