  • Halsey opened up about having bipolar disorder in the new issue of Rolling Stone magazine.

  • The "Bad at Love" singer said she preemptively checks herself into medical centers when she's struggling with her mental health.

Halsey opened up about her struggles with bipolar disorder in a new interview with Rolling Stone and explained that she has checked herself into medical centers twice since she became a mainstay on her fans' playlists.

Halsey said she was diagnosed when she was 17 years old, after she attempted suicide. Since she started performing and using her music career as a means to provide for her family, she said she's been more "accountable" and able to better manage her mental health, which includes knowing when to reach out for help.

She said:

"I’ve been committed twice since [I became] Halsey, and no one’s known about it. But I’m not ashamed of talking about it now. It’s been my choice. I’ve said to [my manager], ‘Hey, I’m not going to do anything bad right now, but I’m getting to the point where I’m scared that I might, so I need to go figure this out.’ It’s still happening in my body. I just know when to get in front of it.”

Halsey also mentioned that for the first time ever, she's writing music while going through a manic period, which she described as being "controlled by those impulses rather than logic and reason.”

She added that she thinks she'll go through a depressed period soon, though. "I know I’m just going to get f*cking depressed and be boring again soon,” she explained. “And I hate that that’s a way of thinking. Every time I wake up and realize I’m back in a depressive episode, I’m bummed. I’m like, ‘F*ck. F*ck! This is where we’re going now? Okay…’ ”

Ultimately, she said she doesn't want to hurt the people she surrounds herself with, so she's committed to managing her mental health.
