The last season ended with Master Chief letting Cortana take control of his body in a fight against the Covenant. It sets up Fall of Reach, a pivotal event covered in both Halo games and books, which fans believe Halo Season 2 will centre on. Here’s what else it could contain.

The Flood emerge

It’s been a slow build, but after nine episodes, Halo’s now established what a ‘Halo’ is. And what they are is gigantic rings designed by ancient race the Forerunners to protect the universe against parasitic aliens The Flood. The way Halo rings do that? Kill The Flood’s food by wiping out all life. Halo Season 2 will focus on the rather bleak concept further.

Glass the planet

30 seconds into the trailer we see blue beams emanating from the sky. This is an orchestrated Covenant attack called ‘glassing’, whereby orbiting ships essentially melt all organic life on a planet and turn its surface into glass. They’re really amping up their efforts in what seems like an even more brutal showcase of power.

Energy swords galore

The energy sword returns, and it looks better than ever. A powerful blade typically wielded by Covenant Elites, in the games it instantly kills whoever it touches. At 1:02 in the trailer it’s revealed in a dramatic, low-light corridor fight in which an Elite violently takes out three gun-wielding marines. This Elite might be an important figure in the season ahead - its armor certainly seems to resemble the shiny silver of Halo 2’s Arbiter, an exceptionally tough Elite.

Master Chief’s baby?

Could we be seeing a tiny Master Chief on the way? In episode 8 of Halo Season 1, Master Chief gets romantic with Makee. It was a first for the super soldier - usually they abstain. But if the Halo writers were so inclined, they could use it to introduce Master Chief's offspring. It would certainly raise the stakes and give the Chief even more to fight for.

New-look Cortana

We also get our first look at Cortana (Jen Taylor), who sports a slightly different color scheme. That’s one of the benefits of being holographic AI. New characters join her. One of them is James Ackerson, a formidable UNSC intelligence operative. Another is Talia Perez (Cristina Rodlo), a UNSC Marine Corps linguistics expert.
