Halloween is officially upon us, and it's time to pull out all the stops for this year's family Halloween costume. Rather than coming up with a separate idea for each member of the crew, go for a cohesive theme. This fun and perfect-for-fall idea pairs an impressive thermos costume with a campfire and a s'mores fairy, plus Smokey the Bear (safety first!). Here's everything you need to get the DIY look, including where to buy the supplies.

Thermos Halloween Costume

Show off your love for vintage items with this easy-to-assemble costume. Download a plaid pattern, or take a photo of a plaid thermos pattern. Have the pattern printed on 48-inch-wide by 36-inch-tall poster paper at your local printer or UPS store. Wrap yourself in the paper “sleeve,” which you can secure with tape. Using a hole-punch, cut holes at the top of the poster to thread sturdy ribbon. Hot glue a red thermos lid to a headband. Carry a thermos with your favorite hot beverage.

Campfire with Marshmallow Costume

Start with a long-sleeve brown t-shirt. Cut out “flames” from red, yellow, and orange felt and sew on (or secure) as desired. Secure brown grosgrain ribbon to shoulders to tie on an 18-inch grapevine wreath. Embellish the grapevine wreath with logs made from brown or wood grain cardstock and orange battery-operated string lights. Use a white foam sheet to create the marshmallow head piece. Secure foam sheet to hair with bobby pins. Embellish with orange tissue paper and a long stick (secured to the inside with duct tape). Pair costume with a vintage kettle repurposed as a trick-or-treating bucket.

S'mores Fairy Costume

Is there such a thing? There is now! Start with a white dress. (Tip: Seek out used flower girl dresses on eBay or Facebook Marketplace.) Add a band of tan velvet ribbon and a DIY cardboard or felt “graham cracker” at the waist. Add brown felt “chocolate bars” to the shoes. Find a stick from the yard and add a marshmallow for the fairy wand. Cut out wings from cardboard; add graham-cracker like dots and dotted-line (perforations) using a dark brown marker. Construct a complete “s’more” with felt; secure to headband with thread or hot-glue. Pair costume with a vintage Campfire Marshmallows tin repurposed as a trick-or-treating bucket.

Smokey the Bear

Start with a brown sweater or brown sweatshirt and dark jeans. Add a park ranger-style hat with the word “Smokey” across the front in black stick-on letters. (You can also opt for an official Smokey mask.) Apply a bear-like nose with black eyeliner or face paint. Pair look with shovel and a stern warning about forest fires.
