Hair at the NAACP Image Awards displays just how versatile black hair can be

At the 2018 NAACP Image Awards — an annual ceremony honoring people of color in film, television, music, and literature — there were natural hairstyles and out-of-this-world beauty looks that were equally breathtaking.

One look that had many people entranced was Grown-ish actress Yara Shahidi’s braided high ponytail. To get this unique updo, celebrity hairstylist Nai’vasha Johnson used a paddle brush to evenly distribute Taliah Waajid Green Apple & Aloe Nutrition Leave-In Conditioner on damp hair. Then she applied Taliah Waajid Curls, Waves, Naturals Curly Curl Gello from roots to ends and sectioned Shahidi’s hair into quadrants. Next, hair was gathered into a tight high pony and separated into three pieces to be braided. Once the braids were secured, a pea-size amount of hair oil was smoothed over the braids to finish — helping to add shine and eliminate frizz.

Tracee Ellis Ross, who plays Shahidi’s TV mom on Black-ish, also graced the red carpet with an elaborate long side-braided ponytail. There were lots of other head-turning hair and makeup moments from Hollywood’s elite. Scroll through for 10 stunning standouts you have to see.
