I keep thinking we’ve reached that point where there are no more new ways to wear Mary Janes, but celebrities keep proving me wrong. The classic, school-girl style, which has easily become this year’s ‘It’ shoe, started with a heel, and then went flat thanks to Gen Z stars, which then got an edgy makeover (ushered in by none-other than Tracee Ellis Ross). And now, with the help of Hailey Bieber, the trend might be reaching a new level of darling.

The model and Rhode skincare founder posted a series of photos to Instagram that convinced me balletcore is very much still in. While in Paris, Bieber could be seen wearing a bubblegum pink mini dress from Tory Burch that looked straight out of The Jetsons, a black bow in her hair, and on her feet, a shoe and sock combo that looked like she just came from dance class.

She wore her all-black, suede Mary Janes with a rolled white tube sock. On their own, the shoes are cute and practical, but with a classic white sock, they’re next-level adorable (and perfect for fall!). So to sweeten up any outfit, from a short sweater dress to a simple pair of jeans, I’m turning toward Bieber’s sock-and-Mary Jane combo with these socks that are $3 apiece and eight lookalike shoes.

$130

Vagabond’s round-toe Jolin Mary Janes are a dead-ringer for Bieber’s pair from The Row. Like her style, these are finished in a soft, black suede and are fastened with a simple silver buckle. However, if you prefer patent leather to suede (which can be a bit more weather sensitive), Sam Edelman offers a nearly identical silhouette for $130.

According to shoppers, this style is “buttery soft” and surprisingly comfortable “right out of the box.” “I’ve been able to easily walk around three-plus hours in them, which I can almost never do in shoes that aren’t sneakers,” raved one customer. And according to another, they’re not just comfortable, they’re also high quality, calling the leather “exquisite.”

Vivaia Margot Square-Toe Mary Jane

Vivaia’s are my personal must-have. The brand, which has been worn by celebrities including Selena Gomez, Katie Holmes, and Scarlett Johansson, is a favorite among our team for its game-changing cushioned insole that’s allowed one of our editors to wear the shoes comfortably for 12 hours straight. These Mary Janes feature a chic square toe (leaning more pointe shoes than traditional ballet flats) and a breathable knit exterior that’s machine washable. While black achieves Bieber’s balletcore look, these are also available in five other colors including a vibrant red and denim blue.

$17

If you’re wanting the look for less, Shoes8teen Mary Janes are an excellent option for just $17 on Amazon. With this style, you’re swapping leather for soft cotton with a suede-like finish. These shoes boast more than 3,600 five-star ratings at Amazon, with many shoppers raving about their comfort. According to one customer, these feel “like wearing slippers.” One person who wore them for over nine hours even said that they experienced “no foot pain at all.” Beyond their feel though, most customers were obsessed with their look, noting that these “go with everything from jeans to dresses.”
