Hailey Bieber Shares How Her Manicure Routine Changed Over the Past Year

Like so many celebrities, Hailey Bieber has been having fun experimenting with her nails this year, and we've been taking note. That said, the model, who keeps it pretty natural when it comes to her hair and makeup, tells Allure that it's always been this way — that manicures have always been her thing.

"Since I was a teenager, I really loved long nails," she says over the phone. "I always did acrylics, and it drove my mom crazy because she's so not like that."

Bieber is all about the ultra-long-nail life, just like her pal and fellow manicure lover Kylie Jenner. "I always like to add a little bit of length to my nails because I have really long fingers and I just think it complements my hands really well," she says. Throughout the years, though, the 24-year-old has ditched acrylics and pivoted to PolyGel (which she has applied via private nail technician) to get that extra length. “[It's] basically a flexible gel that you can do extensions with, but you don't have to use anything acrylic, and it's a lot healthier for your nails,” she says before adding that color and shape is where she really likes to spice it up.

"I like to play around with different colors, especially. I really love right now, for the season, really dark browns, like toffee, chocolates, and dark forest green," she says. As for the shape, it completely depends on her mood. "Sometimes I'll like the pointier side, sometimes just my natural nail shape but longer," she muses. "I've been able to play with my nails a bit more during COVID because I'm not working as much [and] when I'm working more consistently, I have to have as neutral of a nail as possible because different magazines or clients or jobs want different things, and most of the time it's a very short, neutral nail."

Bieber is back to getting her nails done again by the same artist that she's been seeing for years, but when stay-at-home orders were in effect, she says she relished doing her own manicures. "When we were quarantined up for a while up in Canada, I was doing my own nails. They were natural, and I was just letting them grow," she says."That was fun to be able to do. I'm not the best at painting my nails, but I was trying my best."

Still, she feels extremely grateful to be getting her nails done professionally on a more regular basis these days. "She comes, we test her, and we wear our masks, and we get the job done," she says. "I feel so lucky to be able to do that during this time because having a fresh manicure really is a game-changer."

Bieber also dishes another staple beauty product that she's been loving lately — one that she definitely has no problem applying herself: Bareminerals' new Original Liquid Mineral Foundation (Bieber is a spokesperson for the brand). "I'm not a big foundation wearer, but I love this one for the days when I'm doing more of a glam or date-night look," she says.

You can score the brand's new Original Liquid Mineral Foundation SPF 20 ($35) on bareminerals.com starting December 28, along with the new Original Liquid Mineral Concealer ($25).
