Ever since his departure from Berluti in 2018, there’s been ample speculation over if and when Haider Ackermann—one of fashion’s most graceful avant-gardists—would return to the helm of another house. In the intervening years, the French-Colombian designer has put his namesake label on hiatus, designed a one-off couture collection for Jean Paul Gaultier, and focused primarily on crafting bespoke red carpet looks for his famous pals, Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner chief among them. Well, we’ve finally gotten an answer, and it’s a surprising one: Today, the down parka specialists at Canada Goose have officially appointed Ackermann as the brand’s first-ever creative director.

Founded in Toronto in 1957, Canada Goose has built its reputation on luxurious, impenetrable coats, beloved by both real-deal Antarctic explorers and A-list celebs alike. While the label has dabbled in high-fashion circles before—including a multi-year partnership with the renowned London design school Central Saint Martins—the Ackermann announcement signals a bold new era for Canada Goose. “When it comes to the marriage of craftsmanship and beauty, there's no one more fitting than Haider Ackermann,” Dani Reiss, Canada Goose’s chairman and CEO, said in a statement. “With his distinct ability to harness the energy and potential of our authentic heritage, I look forward to seeing his impact across our designs.”

It remains to be seen how far exactly Ackermann, who is known for his precise and innovative tailoring, will push the company in terms of aesthetics and product categories—in addition to its vaunted technical outerwear, Canada Goose currently offers a more casual range of sweats, knits, and activewear. Ackermann will remain based in Paris, working closely with the Toronto-based Reiss, with his first seasonal capsule collection due to launch later this fall.

“What drew me to Canada Goose is not only how they have created a category, but also its authentic reputation and drive to stay committed to its purpose. The impact this brand has had on the world around us is meaningful and inspirational,” Ackermann said in a statement.

The appointment coincides with the launch of a new campaign starring Ackermann and Jane Fonda, in support of conservation non-profit Polar Bears International. In the photos, Fonda and Ackermann wear a new limited-edition sweatshirt which drops at CanadaGoose.com today, with all proceeds going to support PBI.
