  • The real Gypsy Rose Blanchard from The Act just got engaged.

  • Her fiancé is a man she met in prison, not Nick Godejohn-her ex-boyfriend who murdered her mother Dee Dee for her.

  • Gypsy and her current beau met through a pen pal program while incarcerated.

If you thought this week's episode of The Act was exciting, you ain't seen nothing yet. IRL, Gypsy Rose Blanchard-whose life the Hulu show The Act is based on-is reportedly engaged to a man she met in prison, where she is serving a 10-year-sentence for her mother Dee Dee's murder, per Us Weekly.

The pair reportedly met through a pen pal program while incarcerated. "He started writing her and then visited her," family friend Fancy Macelli told In Touch. "They just grew to have a relationship… They’re taking it slow. They don’t know exactly what they’re going to do when she gets out. It’s a long way down the road, obviously, so things can change."

Gypsy, now 27, was the victim of Munchausen syndrome by proxy, recently renamed factitious disorder imposed on another (FDIA), a mental health disorder where a caregiver fabricates or causes an illness or injury to a person under their care for attention and sympathy, often subjecting the victim to unnecessary medical treatments. Throughout Gypsy's childhood and adolescence, her mother, Dee Dee, claimed that her daughter suffered from leukemia, asthma, muscular dystrophy, seizures, brain damage, and learning disabilities, even though she was perfectly healthy.

As a result of her mother's mental disorder, dating was difficult for Gypsy, whose first boyfriend Nick Godejohn is currently serving life in prison for Dee Dee's murder. They first connected on a Christian dating website when Gypsy was 21, and then met in person three years later at a screening of Cinderella, with Dee Dee present. Dee Dee didn't approve of the relationship, so the two snuck out of the theater and hooked up in the movie theater bathroom. (The heart wants what it wants, okay?)

Unlike with Godejohn, Gypsy's father and stepmother have a seemingly positive relationship with her fiancé. Macelli told In Touch, "they’ve been communicating with him for a long time through phone calls, emails, all of that," and are reportedly planning to meet him next month.
