Gwyneth Paltrow is opening up about how she approached parenting her teenagers through the notoriously angsty, hormone-ridden years of adolescence, and as counterintuitive as her advice may seem, her method was apparently very effective!

During an interview with People for her November cover story, the Goop founder gushed, “I have been so lucky with my teens.” Of steering her daughter Apple, 19, and son Moses, 17, through the final leg of childhood, Paltrow explained, “We had, probably when Apple, I would say, was about 13, we had a year where I was like, ‘Oh wow, okay.'”

She continued, “But actually my kids have been… I kind of didn’t have the horrible teen thing, I think because I’ve always been very, very honest with my kids and I think I’ve always empowered them with a little bit more freedom and responsibility than they thought they were ready for.”

“They’ve treated it with reverence,” the movie star added. “I’ve always said, ‘I don’t need to give you a curfew unless you give me a reason to give you a curfew,’ kind of thing. They’re responsible and they’ve never done anything too crazy.”

“I really loved having teenagers,” Paltrow rhapsodized. “I mean, Apple’s in her last year of her teenage years now, which is so crazy to me that she’ll be 20 on her next birthday. I don’t quite know how that happened,” she wistfully mused.

This isn’t the first time the Iron Man star has shared her advice for navigating difficult parts of parenthood. In August, the businesswoman hosted a Q&A on Instagram, and one fan asked about her experience becoming a stepmom to her husband Brad Falchuk’s kids.

Paltrow candidly began, “I did find it really hard at first. You know, there’s no book on this; nobody tells us what to do. And in fact, all of the existing media around what a stepmother is casts us in this evil, villainous light, so it’s kind of like trying to avoid land mines,” the Se7en actress asserted.

“And then you’re going into a family with dynamics,” Paltrow added. “There’s all kinds of fear around loss and what does this person mean? But for myself, the minute I decided and fully embodied the idea that my stepkids were my kids and I love them just as much and I gave them the same rules and boundaries, and just kind of whole-heartedly went for it, then the easier the whole thing got,” she explained. “And now it’s pretty great.”
