Gwyneth Paltrow Calls Apple Entitled, Like It's a Good Thing

Our society’s march toward equality for all can sometimes seem agonizingly slow, but when we think of it in terms of our children’s future, perhaps it might happen in the nick of time, the way Gwyneth Paltrow sees things. The actor and GOOP entrepreneur sat down for an interview at the virtual conference Adobe MAX on Wednesday and spoke about how her 16-year-old daughter, Apple, and her friends feel downright entitled to the world, in a good way.
“We’re laying the groundwork for the change,” Paltrow told Adobe CMO Ann Lewnes when asked about her work for more female representation in the entertainment industry. “The #MeToo movement was a big part of that change. Black Lives Matter is part of that change. What we’re saying collectively as a culture and a society is that we are done with that paradigm of patriarchy, of white men. The patriarchy itself feels like it’s cracking and starting to embrace a much wider variety of voices and races and genders.”
Paltrow spoke about how she looks to women like her mother, friends, and coworkers for inspiration, but she also spoke about Apple Martin and her friends as beacons of this more ideal future.

“By the time my daughter is in the workforce, those girls are not going to stand for it,” Paltrow said. “When I see my daughter with her friends, they are so empowered. They have — and I mean this word in the best possible way — a sense of ‘entitlement’ that’s beautiful. It’s not spoiled, it’s like, ‘We are here for what the boys are going to get too.’ I find it very uplifting and heartening that we all seem to be going in this direction together.”
The future is bright if you’re the daughter of two megastars, of course, but we’d like to think that Apple and her friends are representative of how other teenage girls feel, too.
Then again, Paltrow is also making sure her children don’t feel entitled in the wrong way. She recently said on Rob Lowe’s podcast that she encouraged Apple to get a job in retail.
“As a parent, you think, all I can do for these kids is teach them right from wrong and teach them what work is,” she told Lowe. “I really have tried not to just hand them things.”
We won’t turn to Goop for medical advice these days, but that is some sound parenting wisdom right there.
Gwyneth is one of the celebrity parents who admits that the privilege of having a nanny has let them do so much.
