One of the most beautiful aspects of Gwyneth Paltrow's wedding to producer Brad Falchuk was a detail you wouldn't notice from the Instagrams and photos posted online. It's one she kept private until recently, when the actress opened up about how her father's death has affected her on an episode of Dax Shephard's podcast, Armchair Expert.

Gwyneth's dad, Bruce Paltrow, passed away 16 years ago while on a trip to Italy with his daughter. They were celebrating her 30th birthday, People reported, and as Gwyneth revealed to Dax, her birthday became a painful reminder of his absence in her life.

"For years, I would go into kind of the deepest depression of all time around my birthday and then I thought, 'I’ve got to reframe this somehow. My father would not want this for me,' " she said.

So, to shift her perspective, Gwyneth got married two days after her birthday this past September-on the 29th-choosing to say her vows at her Hamptons home, near a tree where her father's ashes are buried. "We got married there-right near my dad," she explained.

Bruce had been battling throat cancer and contracted pneumonia, passing away suddenly. People may say that time heals all wounds, but as Gwyneth Paltrow's Goop has covered previously, grief is a lot more complicated than that.

"I still have a hard time with it," Gwyneth said. "He was such an intentional father, and he was so observant and so deeply supportive and set us up to win all the time."
