  • Gwen Stefani opened up about why she and Blake Shelton waited to get engaged.

  • They were both previously divorced, and Stefani’s divorce from ex-husband Gavin Rossdale was fresh when she and Shelton met on The Voice in 2014.

  • For her, the engagement “was right on time” when Shelton proposed in October.

Fans may think Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani’s engagement was long overdue, but Stefani says it happened right on time. The pair dated for five years, Shelton proposed in October, and now, when she’s not consumed by wedding planning or working on her new album, Stefani’s reflecting on all that she and Shelton have been through together.

“When you fall in love so hard, and so unexpectedly, and so late in your life ... you think, ‘I wanna marry you now!’” the Voice coach said during an interview on Today. “So we always talked about it of course.” But she doesn’t regret waiting as long as they have. After all, they were both previously divorced, and Stefani’s turbulent separation from ex-husband Gavin Rossdale was relatively fresh when she and Shelton met.

“There’s a lot to consider when you have so many people involved, you know children and their hearts,” she explained, referring to her three sons with Rossdale, Kingston, 14, Zuma, 12, and Apollo, 6. “Everybody in my family, his family, we all went through a lot together … then as the years were going by it was sort of like, [marriage] didn’t need to happen. And there was a lot of healing to do.”

But Stefani admitted that, by the time Shelton did propose, she was getting a little antsy. “I was kinda getting a little bit anxious like, ‘Wait a minute, what are we doing?’ … I started having a little insecurity,” she said. Thankfully, Blake already had the ring and was ready to get down on one knee at any minute. “It was right on time,” Stefani smiled.

Every day, she remains blown away by the country star’s acts of kindness. “He’s one of the most generous human beings and down to earth,” she told Today. “He really is just my best friend, and I feel just so excited that I have someone in my life that now, I have a chance at like, happiness—you know what I mean?—for a long time to come. And it’s just a blessing, the whole thing. And it is a miracle.”
