Southwest Airlines passengers flying in the airline's newest concourse at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport had limited food options in its first year of operation.

Sky Harbor's South 1 concourse at Terminal 4, its eighth and final concourse in the terminal, opened in June 2022 and began handling Southwest flights. But several restaurants and shops slated to open in the concourse were delayed.

Now, one restaurant is open, more are expected to follow soon, and another batch of restaurants and shops — including a concept from Food Network star Guy Fieri and a PGA Tour shop with a simulator of TPC Scottsdale's 16th hole — just got initial approval from city airport officials.

Here's what's open now and what's coming soon.

A complete guide: Where to eat while you wait at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport

The first restaurant to open in the new Sky Harbor concourse in Terminal 4

Sip Coffee & Beer recently opened at its permanent location on Aug. 12 near gate D12, after more than a year operating at a temporary kiosk.

The temporary kiosk closed as part of the shop's transition to the permanent space, Sky Harbor spokesman Erick Moreno said.

Sip, which pulls quadruple duty as a coffee shop, tap room, cocktail bar and restaurant is the first restaurant to open in Terminal 4's eighth concourse.

The food menu includes sandwiches, soups, salads and specialties like the PHX burrito and a vegan tamale made with hemp, corn masa, nopales and tomatillos. Breakfast items like bagels, avocado toast, a breakfast sandwich and six types of empanadas are available until 10:30 a.m.

Non-alcoholic drinks include coffee and smoothies. Alcoholic drinks include eight beers on tap, bottled and canned beer and cocktails such as mimosas, Moscow mules, Bloody Marys and micheladas.

Sip's hours are 4:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.

What restaurants are coming soon to Sky Harbor Terminal 4?

The Phoenix Aviation Advisory Board on Aug. 17 approved a lease agreement with PHX S1 Restaurant Partners, a group that includes concessionaires HMSHost, Kind Hospitality and TMG Services LLC, for two restaurant spaces in the new Terminal 4 concourse.

Phoenix airport staff said the group plans to open two new restaurants:

  • Guy Fieri's Phoenix Kitchen + Bar: This sit-down restaurant concept from Guy Fieri, the Food Network star best known for "Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives" — which visited at least 30 Arizona restaurants through the show's run — will feature American specialties like burgers, pizza, wraps, sandwiches and soups. It will be Fieri's second Valley restaurant location following Guy Fieri's DTPHX Kitchen + Bar, located in Caesars Sportsbook at Chase Field.

  • SanTan Spirit House: A concept from SanTan Brewing Company, this quick service restaurant (which will also have seating) will offer "innovative" spirits, as well as sharable food items, pot pies and desserts. This will be SanTan's second Sky Harbor location; its Terminal 3 restaurant serves burgers, sandwiches, beer and liquor.

What new shops are opening in Sky Harbor Terminal 4?

The advisory board also approved a lease agreement with Paradies Lagardere, a travel retailer that operates several stores at Sky Harbor and Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, for two retail spaces.

Phoenix airport staff said Paradies Lagardere intends to open two new shops in Terminal 4's eighth concourse:

  • PGA Tour FanShop: This shop will specialize in golf lifestyle items like golf apparel and accessories. It also will include a simulator of the 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale, a big draw of the WM Phoenix Open held in February.

  • Arizona Roadtrip: This store will sell convenience items and locally made goods like wine and olive oil. It will also include a "unique display" featuring local artisans and a kids’ zone with activities.

When will the newly announced restaurants and shops open?

It's too early to say. The next step in the process is for the Phoenix City Council to approve the airport's contracts with the concessionaires.

The council is scheduled to vote on the contracts on Oct. 18, Moreno said.

When will the first batch of restaurants and shops open?

The first phase of restaurants and shops at Terminal 4's eighth concourse remains in progress and no opening dates are set for them, Moreno said.

The five restaurants expected to open soon are:

  • Chick-fil-A: The chicken sandwich chain will open its first Arizona airport location at Sky Harbor, one of five new restaurants it plans to open in 2023 in metro Phoenix.

  • Pedal Haus Brewing: The local brewery with locations in Tempe, Phoenix and Chandler will serve beer and American comfort food.

  • Bobby's Burgers: Celebrity chef Bobby Flay's first metro Phoenix restaurant will feature burgers, fries and shakes.

  • Eegee's: This Arizona chain with locations in Tucson, metro Phoenix and Casa Grande will serve sandwiches and the frozen fruit drinks that give the restaurant its name.

  • Berry Divine: This local chain serves acai bowls and smoothies.

The two shops expected to open soon are:

  • Uptown Phoenix: This store will feature convenience items as well as travel accessories like luggage and sunglasses. It will feature items from local retailers like Changing Hands Bookstore. Similar to Sip, Uptown Phoenix is operating in a temporary kiosk while awaiting a permanent storefront to be ready.

  • InMotion: Retailer specializing in electronics such as headphones, fitness tracking devices and battery backups, and travel accessories such as backpacks and laptop bags. This will be InMotion's fourth store at Sky Harbor; it also operates one in Terminal 3 and two in other concourses in Terminal 4.

Concessionaire The Grove Inc. recently posted job openings for several positions at the new restaurants, including cook, bartender and shift manager. The job postings don't say when the restaurants might open.
