One year following beloved Chef Carl Ruiz's death, his friends and fans gathered virtually to celebrate and remember him. This included Guy Fieri, who sent out a call to Carl's fans and friends to honor his memory by supporting their local restaurants.
In a video on his Instagram page on Monday, Guy called on his followers to celebrate "The Great Cuban," who he called "one of the greatest chefs, one of my best friends, and one of the funniest people I've ever met in my life." He suggested they do so by taking care of their local restaurants and supporting workers like Carl did during his life and like he was sure he would be doing now, especially in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
What a year it has been since we lost Carl Ruiz on 9/21/19. To honor his memory this year we are creating a DAY OF #RUIZING and we are asking everyone to support a local restaurant. I am encouraging everyone to dine-in /carry-out or order delivery from your favorite restaurant AND THEN just as Carl would - tip super generously. Mark your receipt or your $ with #dontstopruizing and post of picture of it to Facebook tagging @chefcarlruiz. Show us how you were a generous tipper and tell us where you went. We will be doing exactly what Carl would be doing to help folks in the restaurant industry during these challenging times!!! Hope you enjoy the video the team at @8itapp created in honor of Carl! #dontstopruizing #ruizing #pinkiesup

"Do what he did," Guy suggested. "He loved to go out and eat food and go to restaurants, and he used to love to tip big. He was a big fan of the industry, always taking care of his brothers and sisters in the biz."
Guy then challenged everyone to order food for take-out or dine in and then "tip super generously." He also asked that people mark their receipt or cash tip with #dontstopruizing and post it for all to see. The hashtag is now full of people doing just that, with photos of big tips and fans sharing their favorite memories of Carl.
In addition to Guy's post, many of Carl's other famous friends also posted in his memory including Guy's son Hunter, who called Carl a "one of a kind person." Fellow Food Network star Alex Guarnaschelli posted a photo calling him a "one-man party," and Chef Aaron May posted a sweet photo of the pair embracing.
A one of a kind person! We miss our brother everyday! Today 9/21 is now #ruizing Day where we celebrate The Cuban! Show the Cuban your love by doing what he always did; TIP LIKE A BALLER! Go support your local restaurants and take care of our restaurant industry employees! Love you Cuban ❤️🥃 #ruizon #dontstopruizing #ruizingforever

1 year since this wonderful, dastardly Cuban @saborchef left us. Beyond humble. Shy and bold in equal measure. Kind. He was literally like a one-man party wherever he went. He also made a great dessert empanada.....Keep #ruizing as we know he is. 💔 💔😢 #restinpeace
