Guillermo del Toro's 'Pinocchio' Trailer Sees a Wooden Puppet Fight for His Place in the World
Netflix has dropped the official trailer for Guillermo del Toro‘s upcoming stop-motion Pinocchio film.
"Over there, what is that?" an unnamed villager exclaims in the trailer as the wooden Pinocchio, voiced by Gregory Mann, enters the opening shot. In the next scene, Gepetto, voiced by David Bradley, a grieving father who carves the talking puppet following the death of his son, attempts to explain to Pinocchio the town's shocked expressions upon his arrival: "People are sometimes afraid of things they don't know." The defeated boy responds, "I don't understand."
Quickly, though, the outcasted puppet becomes a star, performing for cheering crowds at a circus venue. But as he finds his place in the world, the trailer makes it clear that Pinocchio must endure his fair share of cruel and mischievous escapades.
According to Netflix’s official description, del Toro “reinvents Carlo Collodi’s classic tale of the wooden marionette who is magically brought to life in order to mend the heart of a grieving woodcarver.” The streamer teases, "it is a story you think you may know… but you don’t."
Along with Bradley and Mann, the voice cast includes Ewan McGregor, Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton, Christoph Waltz, Ron Perlman, Finn Wolfhard, John Turturro, Tim Blake Nelson and Burn Gorman.
The film, which had a world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival, is directed by Oscar-winner del Toro and Mark Gustafson, based on a script written by del Toro and Patrick McHale. The project's producers include del Toro, Lisa Henson (Jim Henson Company), Alex Bulkley, Corey Campodonico (Shadow Machine) and Gary Ungar.
Netflix will release Pinocchio on its streaming service and in select theaters on December 9. Watch the official trailer above.
