A Guide to the Perfect Glitter Eye, According to the Oscar de la Renta Runway

Oscar de la Renta’s Fall 2018 runway just offered a lesson in wearing glitter makeup—and it’s impossible to mess up.

“I’m not a fan of the makeup in [YouTube] tutorials,” declared Tom Pecheux backstage at Oscar de la Renta’s Fall 2018 show this afternoon, citing the by-the-numbers approach to contouring that has become the prescriptive mainstay of social media beauty videos. “For me, makeup is to make you more unique than what you are [already]—more than making you look like everybody else.” With that in mind, Pecheux traded shaded cheekbones for fresh, glowing skin and one scene-stealing product: MAC’s 3-D glitter.

“It doesn’t hide anything, so you are who you are,” he said of the playful, prismatic pop that was worn by the likes of models Grace Elizabeth, Daniela Kocianova, and Erin Wasson (making a rare runway appearance, to the surprise of die-hard early-aughts fashion fans everywhere). A lavender cream proved the perfect adhesive base for the sparkling speckles, which were tapped onto the center of the lid with a small brush and just below the eye. “People always try to make glitter stay in one place and it doesn’t work, so it’s better to make it a study in falling glitter,” said Pecheux with a twinkle of the perfectly imperfect placement—a boon to anyone looking to make a statement while running to and fro this New York Fashion Week.
