Regardless of how many times you hear how important it is to measure your space or account for pet-friendly fabric, things come up, and changing your mind on big-ticket items happens more often than you think. This is why it's crucial to read the fine print and understand the furniture return policy, otherwise, you may get hit with massive shipping fees if you decide to bring your purchases back.

To avoid any surprises, we've rounded up the return policies of some of the most popular home stores around. Now that you have all the rules in one place, you'll be able to shop, rethink, and figure things out easier than ever.

Amazon

The major online e-tailer gives customers only 30 days from when the delivery is received to return any furniture for whatever reason. If the item was bought from a third-party retailer, you will have to contact the manufacturer directly. Once you're ready to drop the item off, Amazon states: "Don’t worry about printing a label or packing up your item. Just go to Your Orders and select the item you wish to return. Tell us why you want to return this item, then choose a drop-off location that supports label-free, box-free returns. We’ll send you a QR code; bring your code and item to the drop-off location, and you’re done."

Bed Bath & Beyond

An in-store return is a breeze because even if you don't have a receipt, you can receive a store credit. In addition, all online orders already come with a pre-paid shipping label that can be used at any time.

Casper

Casper understands that it takes the body time to adjust to a new mattress so take advantage of the complimentary risk-free, 100-night trial. And if you're still not sold, print the shipping label, prepare your package, and drop it off at your nearest UPS store at no extra cost.

IKEA

The IKEA return policy is a dream, but you will have to pay the shipping fees. "If you're not totally satisfied with your IKEA purchase you can return new and unopened products within 365 days, together with your proof of purchase, for a full refund," according to the site. "You may also return open products within 180 days, with your proof of purchase, for a full refund."

Joybird

Joybird has a generous 90-day time limit, but the site outlines that the "return shipping costs are the responsibility of the customer." Shipping a couch can reportedly cost up to $600 depending on how far it has to go, so make sure to keep that in mind.

Nordstrom

In-store returns at Nordstrom are free, but you'll have to pay for shipping if you opt to do it by mail. However, Nordstrom does have a handy customer service line for returns with representatives ready to help with any and all questions!

Wayfair

Wayfair's deals—especially during the highly-anticipated Way Day sale—are what make the retailer stand out. Then again, if you find out you no longer want something you ordered, the site indicates return shipping costs "vary depending on the location of the return, size, and weight of the item and selected return method." Therefore, it's totally possible that an affordable find may be worth keeping, reimagining in another space, or even reselling on Facebook Marketplace, rather than going through the hassle and added costs of shipping it back. (Note: This doesn't apply to Wayfair's 100-night mattress trials, which provide free returns.)
