TikTok fashion trends tend to explode out of nowhere, take hold of our collective consciousness (and wallets), and disappear into the night as swiftly as they came. But one TikTok trend that seems to have some staying power is the coastal cowgirl aesthetic. In fact, we expect coastal cowgirl fashion to stick around all spring and well into summer, simply because it’s so versatile. (Having over seven billion views on TikTok also doesn't hurt its chances at longevity.) While this aesthetic is distinct, as fashion expert and stylist Samantha Sutton explains, it's also easy to make your own using pieces you likely already have in your closet.

"Overall, the coastal cowgirl trend is both rugged and relaxed," Sutton tells InStyle. "It combines the easy breezy coastal feel that comes from knits and oversized button-downs with classic 'cowgirl' essentials, like denim, western boots, big buckle belts, and even cowboy hats."

While there are certainly specific styling tricks and pieces that bring an air of yeehaw to the coastal cowgirl look, Sutton says not to overthink it. "The reason why this aesthetic is taking off is that it feels so effortless and throw-on-and-go," she says.

For folks new to the trend, she explains that, "you’ll be fine with just three or four items, such as your favorite pair of denim cutoffs, a knit tank top, and maybe a leather jacket for chillier temperatures." If you're running low on ranch-appropriate attire, don't fret. You don't have to look rodeo-ready to get in on the coastal cowgirl trend. You can cultivate the vibe of this aesthetic with standard wardrobe staples, Sutton explains, citing button-down shirts, crochet sweaters, denim bottoms, and oversized leather jackets as pieces that easily fit the theme.

That said, Sutton does recommend an accessory that's splurge-worthy if you're going gaga for this aesthetic. "The one item you might want to invest in, which will pull these pieces together and give it that true coastal cowgirl spin, is a pair of cowboy boots," she explains.

With a single strong Westernwear piece — or pieces, in the case of cowboy boots — you can begin to make the coastal cowgirl aesthetic your own, a must when dipping your toes into this style, according to Sutton. "Remember that the best interpretation of this or any trend is something that also speaks to your personal style," she says. "There are no rules here. Knits can be swapped out for a sexy corset top with cowboy boots. Or, you skip the boots altogether and still nail the trend by pairing a cowboy hat with jean shorts and a white tank top," she says.

In the spirit of making this viral trend work for you, we've taken a deep dive into the different coastal cowgirl aesthetics you can try on for size. Ahead, you'll find our favorite coastal cowgirl vibes, from floral and flirty to denim-on-denim.

To lean into this version of coastal cowgirl, we recommend combining nautical prints and patterns, feminine detailing like ruffles and ribbons, and rugged boots for a delightfully on-trend contrast.
