During this month’s PlayStation Showcase, Rockstar Games announced that next-gen updates for both Grand Theft Auto V and GTA Online have been delayed until March 2022. There was a bit of good news for PlayStation 5 players, however, as the team also announced the standalone version of GTA Online will be free to download the first three months after launch.

Similar to what Rockstar did with Red Dead Online, GTA Online will be getting a standalone version — meaning you’ll be able to pick up the online game at a reduced price without having to spend extra money on GTA V. It’s unclear how much the publisher will charge for the new title, although Red Dead Online is currently listed at $19.99, so it’s not much of a stretch to think the same price tag will apply to GTA Online next year.

PlayStation 5 owners, however, will be able to add the game to their library for free. If you’re a PS Plus member and download the game within three months of launch, you’ll be able to continue playing it as long as you’re a subscriber.

PS Plus members won’t just get the game for free in 2022, but they can also take advantage of an ongoing promotion that grants them GTA$1,000,000 every single month until GTA Online and GTA V arrive on PlayStation 5. To claim your free cash, head over to the PlayStation Store each month to find the exclusive bonus.

What Enhancements Are Coming to PS5?

Rockstar says the next-gen version of both games will be “expanded and enhanced,” and we’re finally starting to learn exactly what that means. We’re still waiting to hear about framerate bumps and 4K resolutions, but we do know it’ll benefit from significantly reduced load times — making it easy to switch between the game’s main characters without any downtime.

We should also see denser traffic, improved draw distance and an assortment of new content such as cars, guns and other collectibles. Rockstar is keeping most of its cards close to its chest, so we’ll have to wait for an official announcement before getting too excited about the next-gen update.

Rockstar is yet to announce how it will monetize the next-gen update to GTA V. Current owners may get the game for free, although it wouldn’t be surprising to see a $9.99 price tag attached to upgrading your copy from PS4 to PS5.

It’s also unclear how much GTA V will cost for folks who don’t own a current copy of the game. Take-Two has previously mentioned it would like to sell games for $69.99 on next-gen consoles, although there’s no confirmation GTA V will carry that hefty price tag.
