Grubhub Unwraps the Country's Top Food Orders of 2022—Find Out What's No. 1
This is basically the Spotify Wrapped of takeout orders.
2022 saw a lot of food trends–butter boards, caviar, that viral pink sauce–but in the world of takeout, the most popular food orders were never a part of any of these fads.
In new delivery data revealed by Grubhub, burritos were Americans' most-ordered food item, with four million burritos delivered throughout the year.
Jumping up from the eighth most popular spot in 2021, the only thing diners couldn't agree on is how to eat your burrito. Some prefer to slam a breakfast burrito packed with sausage and eggs, while others opted for the creaminess of guacamole and sour cream, and some even took it to-go in a bowl. (P.S. to celebrate burrito's popularity, Chipotle is offering $5 off orders of $20 or more for Grubhub+ members every day this December).
Grubhub ranked a few of its other most popular lunch and dinner entrees throughout the year, and in second was the all-American classic: cheeseburgers. Followed by cheese pizza, which at one point, saw a maximum of 60 pies requested for one order. Pad Thai ranked fourth; coming in closely behind were chicken quesadillas, California rolls, and fried chicken sandwiches.
Ceasar salads, Chicken Tikka Masala, and boneless wings claimed the bottom three spots for top dishes of the year. And you can't forget the dips! Ketchup claimed the slot as the most popular condiment.
Breakfast was a whole different game, with U.S. diners preferring to order a sausage, egg and cheese sandwich over anything else. Other notable mentions in this category include:
Doughnuts
Sausage burritos
Bagels with cream cheese
Muffins
And no breakfast is complete without a good ol' cup of coffee. The top coffee orders ranked:
Iced Coffee
Hot Coffee
Iced Caramel Coffee
Iced French Vanilla Coffee
Frozen Coffee
Out of all the dairy-free milk alternatives, oat milk reigned supreme, followed by:
Almond Milk
Coconut Milk
Soy Milk
Cashew Milk
The most late-night orders came from a city in New England, and I know what you're thinking, but it's not New York City. Apparently, the city that never sleeps has a bedtime, and it's well before those in Boston, as Bostonians ordered the most food after 10 p.m. The food that was requested the most for "second dinner" didn't deviate all too much from Grubhub's most popular dishes, but there were some switch-ups, as seen below:
Chicken quesadilla
Fried chicken sandwich
Cheeseburger
Mozzarella sticks
Cheese pizza
When it came time to savor something sweet, tiramisu and baklava made the two most popular dessert items. Followed by:
Cookies
Cheesecake
Brownie
Churros
Cannoli
Carrot cake
Chocolate cake
Flan
In some states, Grubhub can even deliver alcohol. The most popular adult beverage to have dropped off? Beer. Also ranking were:
Margarita
Hot sake
Pina colada
White wine (specifically Sauvignon Blanc)
