Group seeks volunteers for river clean-up

May 2—A clean-up of the Missouri River is set for later this month in St. Joseph.

The nonprofit organization Missouri River Relief is leading a cleanup and education event on Saturday, May 18, out of the French Bottom river access near the Remington Nature Center.

Volunteers pre-register and then arrive early in the morning to check in, receiving a T-shirt and water bottle. After an educational orientation, volunteers receive a safety briefing and get into life jackets to head out in a boat to pre-scouted trash sites on the banks of the Missouri River.

After cleaning up for a couple of hours, volunteers return to the boat ramp for lunch and more educational activities.

The group has done 224 river cleanups, removing 1,064 tons of trash from the Missouri River with more than 33,000 volunteers from Omaha to St. Louis.
