  • Pedro Pascal is known for being kind and accommodating to his passionate fanbase.

  • That used to include allowing them to put their thumbs on his eyes, in reference to his Game of Thrones character's death.

  • He had to curb his generosity when one fan gave him something in return: an eye infection.

Actor Pedro Pascal is many things: a Mandalorian, a Martell, a Kingsman, a guy named Joel. He even holds the distinction of being the only part of Wonder Woman 1984 that even the most ardent hater had to go, "He was good though." And Pascal has most recently teamed with legendary Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar and fashion house Saint Laurent for a short film opposite Ethan Hawke, in which the two play reunited cowboy lovers.

This is all to say, Pedro Pascal has been very fortunate in his career thus far, and he doesn't it for granted. In fact, Pascal is so grateful for the passionate support of his fans across this journey he's on that he's been way more accommodating to fan requests than anybody else would be. And while those fans walked away with a selfie, Pedro himself walked away with something else: an eye infection.

Pascal recently took part in The Hollywood Reporter's Drama Actors Roundtable, alongside Jeff Bridges, Kieran Culkin, Damson Idris, Michael Imperioli, and Evan Peters. And while the most viral clip from the roundtable thus far has been Jeff Bridges landing arguably the finest joke ever delivered at one of these things, Pascal slipped in an anecdote that has us a little worried for the man.

Pascal shared that, when he was first seriously in the public eye (pun intended) thanks to his role as Oberyn Martell in the HBO series Game of Thrones, fans would stop him on the street with a very specific request. "I remember, earlier on, because of Game of Thrones and the way my character died," he said in the clip, "people were super into taking selfies with their thumbs in my eyes."

That's in reference to the fact that his braggadocios swordsman character died at the hands (literally) of Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane, played by Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, who gouged out Martell's eyes with his thumbs.

"At first, I was so earnest and happy about the success of the character in the show, and I’d let them," Pascal continued. But thankfully, it seems he's largely discontinued the practice after he contracted what he calls "a bit of an eye infection."

Of course, that story might be a bit of light fun, but it does point to something a bit more concerning. The truth of it is, Pedro Pascal has arguably been subjected to more blunt, vocal, and borderline dehumanizing thirsty discourse from fans than any male actor since Rudolph Valentino dropped dead in 1926. And the fact that there are multiple thinkpieces calling out fans for their creepy behavior should be a sign that perhaps folks need to remember that just because a celebrity as nice as Pedro Pascal will accommodate a weird fan request, it doesn't mean fans should be asking for them in the first place.

A good rule of thumb (pun intended)? If the thing you're thinking of asking for would make a person call the cops on you if you asked it of them, it's also not okay to ask of the man who played a cop on Narcos.
